PM condoles deaths, announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for kin of dead, Rs 50,000 for injured
At least 17 people, including three women and two children, were killed in a major fire that broke out at Gulzar House, a building near the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad on Sunday (May 18).
A short circuit is suspected to have caused the inferno.
What caused the fire?
The fire broke out in a narrow room, making it difficult for the residents to escape. Officials said that there were 30 people in one room.
Among the deceased, who have been identified, are Sumitra, 65, Abhishek, 30, Aarushi Jain, 17, Harshali Gupta,7 , Munsibai, 72, Sheetal Jain, 37, Rajender ,67 and Iraj, 2.
The injured are being treated at three hospitals. The condition of two others is critical.

CM expresses grief
According to a fire department official, they received a call around 6.30 am and rushed to the spot. Several people were found unconscious and shifted to various hospitals.
Expressing shock over the tragedy on X, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said he has asked officials to intensify relief efforts and provide treatment to the injured.
PM announces ex-gratia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
"The loss of life in the fire accident in Hyderabad city in Telangana state has caused deep sorrow. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured. PMNRF to provide Rs. 2 lakh ex-gratia to kin of deceased, Rs. 50,000 to injured," the prime minister's office said on X.
