CM says those who are seriously injured will get Rs 10 lakh, while those who are injured but can resume work after some recovery will be provided Rs 5 lakh each


Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday (July 1) said his government will engage with the management of Sigachi Industries Ltd to ensure that a compensation of Rs 1 crore is paid to the kin of those who died in the explosion at the pharma plant in Pashamylaram.

The CM also said those who are seriously injured will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those who are injured but can resume work after some recovery will be provided Rs 5 lakh. Also, the state government will pay Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured to meet any immediate and emergency expenses.

Death toll up

The toll in the explosion at the Sigachi Industries' pharma plant in Pashamylaram has risen to 45. The fatal accident on Monday is suspected to have been caused by a chemical reaction.

Sigachi Industries Limited is a pharmaceutical company dedicated to pioneering advancements in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Intermediates, Excipients, vitamin-mineral blends, and Operations and Management (O&M) services, according to the company's website.

    Case to be filed against firm management

    The Sangareddy district police have registered an FIR in connection with the explosion in the pharma manufacturing plant that claimed 45 lives and left an almost equal number injured, Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj said on Tuesday.

    "We have registered an FIR in this case under Sections 105, 110 and 117 of BNS. The investigation is on," the official said.

    Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) deals with the punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Section 110 deals with the attempt to commit culpable homicide, while Section 117 deals with the offense of "Voluntarily causing grievous hurt".

    A senior official from the Department of Factories, Telangana, said that they would file a case against the management of the pharma plant regarding the incident.

    "We are inquiring. We will book a case. First we will issue a notice under the Factories Act 1948 against the license holder and manager of the unit seeking their explanation on the lapses," the official said.

    The notice is likely to be issued in a couple of days, the official added.

    Sigachi shares continue to plunge

    Shares of pharmaceuticals firm Sigachi Industries Ltd fell nearly 6 per cent on Tuesday, extending their previous day's decline, after an explosion at its manufacturing facility in Telangana killed several people.

    The stock plunged 5.57 per cent to settle at Rs 46.07 on the BSE. During the day, it dropped 8.36 per cent to Rs 44.71.

    At the NSE, it fell by 5.76 per cent to end at Rs 45.95.

    Shares of Sigachi Industries Ltd had tanked over 11.50 per cent on Monday also.

    Pregnant woman searches for missing family after Telangana factory blast

    It has been an agonizing wait for Pooja Kumari, a seven-month pregnant woman from Bihar, who is desperately seeking information on four missing family members—her husband, two uncles, and her brother—following the devastating blast at the Sigachi Industries plant in Sanga Reddy district.

    With tears, she has been pleading with the officials at the blast site for any information about her loved ones, but so far her pleas have gone unanswered.

    “We went and searched in hospitals. But could not locate them. We are from Bihar. He ( husband) came for duty at 8 am (on Monday),” she told PTI videos.

    The couple has been married for three years and has a one-and-a-half-year-old son.

    The woman's husband Naga Paswan, brother Deepak Paswan, and uncles Dilip Gosani and Dablu were all working at Sigachi’s pharmaceutical unit when the explosion ripped through the premises.

    Death toll rises to 45; rescue operations continue: Report

    The death toll due to the explosion in Sigachi Chloro Chemical Private Limited increased to 45 overnight as the NDRF, HYDRAA and Telangana Fire Disaster Response teams continued the rescue operations throughout the night.

    As many as 35 people were undergoing treatment in different hospitals. The condition of 10 of them is said to be critical.

    The teams have reportedly continued the rescue operations as the employees feared that there were many people trapped under the debris of the company building which collapsed after they gathered at the industry to find out their family members.

    Company, govt to pay Rs 1 crore compensation, says CM

    Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Tuesday said his government will engage with the management of Sigachi Industries Ltd to ensure that a compensation of Rs 1 crore is paid to the kin of those who died in the explosion at the pharma plant in Pashamylaram.

    The CM also said those who are seriously injured will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those who are injured but can resume work after some recovery will be provided Rs 5 lakh.

    “The state government will talk to the company management that Rs 1 crore each compensation will be paid to the deceased families. I have issued orders that from both the government side and company side Rs 1 Crore compensation will be paid,” the CM said.

    Also, the state government will pay Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured to meet any immediate and emergency expenses.

    According to information provided by the officials, most of the deceased were from Odisha, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

    There were 143 people at the time of the blast out of which 56 are in touch with the officials. Search is on the rest of the people.

    “Thirty six people have lost their lives. Some are still missing. Officials are in the process of collecting information,” he said.

    Reddy further said the medical expenses for the injured will be borne by the state government and Sigachi.

    He asserted that action will be taken against those responsible for the unfortunate incident.

    Telangana govt slams Sigachi industries management's absence after deadly blast

    The Telangana government on Tuesday gave a dressing down to the management of Sigachi Industries Ltd for its absence following a factory blast that claimed several lives in this district.

    Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy accompanied by Ministers Sridhar Babu, Damodara Raja Narasimha, G Vivek and P Rsinivasa Reddy visited the factory blast site and reviewed the situation with senior officials.

    The CM sought a comprehensive report on the incident, including details of past similar occurrences and preventive measures taken.

    The fatal blast and fire accident at a plant belonging to Sigachi on Monday left 35 dead and an almost equal number injured.

    Replying to the Chief Minister’s query, a company official said the Founder and Executive Chairman of Sigachi was here on Monday.

    Reddy also pressed the company for an action plan regarding the compensation to the victims.

    “Major accident has taken place. He (senior management) has to come. He has to visit the deceased person's families. You can not avoid the situation. He has to come. Ask him to come,” he fumed.

    Industries Minister Sridhar Babu Sridhar Badu said the company has to act on a humanitarian basis.

    “Sorry to say that your top management is not here even after 24 hours. If he is so preoccupied, why does he have to run a factory? Such a major incident, fatal incident has taken place. And our government will take it very seriously, Sridhar Babu said.

    He highlighted that Ministers Raja Narasimha and Vivek have been continuously monitoring the situation for the past 24 hours.

    Sridhar Babu also mentioned that the Director of Factories has provided some sort of indications to the company (on safety issues).

    The Sigachi official replied that all the medical expenses of the victims would be borne by the firm.

    District Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj said, "Several bodies have been found under the debris while removing it. As many as 31 bodies have been extricated from the debris while three died in hospital while undergoing treatment. The last leg of the rescue operation is still going on.” PTI
