Maharashtra civic polls: Mahayuti wave across state; Raut says trends can reverse in Mumbai
In Mumbai, BJP set to end the long reign of Thackerays; Congress saves face in Latur
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is poised to end the Thackeray clan’s near three-decade dominance of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with the BJP leading in 87 wards and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena ahead in 27, together bringing the alliance to the brink of the majority mark of 114.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 65 wards, while its ally, the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), is ahead in six. The Congress is leading in 22 wards, the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in three, while among other parties, the AIMIM is leading in eight wards and the Samajwadi Party in two.
In Pune, the stronghold of the Pawar clan, the BJP is surging ahead with leads in 91 of the 115 seats for which trends are available, while both NCP factions are leading in just 17 seats in the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Similarly, the BJP-led alliance is leading in 105 seats in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), while the Congress is ahead in 33. Nagpur is home to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari. However, amid the Mahayuti wave in the state, the Congress has surprised everyone by winning big in Latur Municipal Corporation.
Polling for 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards in these municipal corporations, including 227 in Mumbai, took place on Thursday. As many as 15,931 candidates are in the fray in the 29 civic corporations, which had 3.48 crore eligible voters.
Around 50 per cent polling was recorded in the 29 municipal corporations, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said after the end of voting. A voter turnout of 52.94 per cent was recorded in the Mumbai civic polls, down from 55.53 per cent in the last elections in 2017, officials said on Friday.
In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), whose annual budget is over Rs 74, 400 crore, 1,700 candidates are vying for 227 seats in elections being held after a four-year delay. Except for Mumbai, the other urban bodies have multi-member wards.

Trust in PM Modi; Gen Z also voting for party, says BJP
The BJP on Friday hailed Mahayuti's performance in the Maharashtra civic polls as "historic" and said the election results reflect the people's "growing trust" in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Breaking the nearly three-decade-old dominance of the undivided Shiv Sena, the BJP on Friday emerged as the single largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, and also triumphed in Pune, where it made mincemeat of the alliance of NCP factions.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, party national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "The historic and unprecedented victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti in the polls clearly shows that people's acceptance and trust in the BJP and the NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership is continuously growing." The "immense popularity" that the BJP has gained under Modi's leadership makes this victory an important milestone in the party's "expansion" with people's growing support, he said.
"Just a few days ago, the BJP secured a majority in Thiruvananthapuram during the Kerala Municipal Corporation elections," the BJP Rajya Sabha MP added.
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said poll results indicate that people of Maharashtra have voted for "nationalism" and "punished" those who indulge in politics that echoes "Pakistan's agenda".
"The mandate received today in Maharashtra's municipal councils and municipal corporations clearly shows that the people of the state have endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies, his nationalism and his commitment to building a Viksit Bharat," he told the press conference.
This result represents the victory of "nationalist forces", he added.
Trivedi said the results of the Maharashtra civic polls indicate that the younger generation has also "strongly and enthusiastically" supported the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.
This makes it clear that the 'Gen Z' has voted in favour of 'VB', meaning 'Viksit Bharat', he said.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is steadily moving forward on the path of a Viksit Bharat. In Maharashtra, this journey is being led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis," he added.

BMC poll trends will change by midnight, says Sena (UBT)’s Raut
Amid trends showing the BJP-Shiv Sena's aggressive march in the Mumbai civic polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said the real picture will emerge only at midnight when the current indications will change after all votes are counted.
Counting of votes for Mumbai and 28 other civic bodies in Maharashtra, which went to polls a day before, is ongoing.
Raut said the BJP may have performed well in the rest of Maharashtra. However, as counting will continue until midnight, the current trends showing defeat of the Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance will reverse.
As per the trends shown by television channels for 210 out of the 227 seats in Mumbai, the BJP is leading in 90 seats, and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena in 28 electoral wards. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP, which contested separately, is leading in three wards.
In the opposition camp, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and its ally, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, are leading in 57 and nine wards, respectively. The Congress, which contested in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, is ahead in 15 wards, and others in eight.
Taking a dig at Shiv Sena, Raut said the Eknath Shinde-led party has not been able to do anything outside Thane.
"The way it is being shown that Shiv Sena (UBT) is trailing behind... Current figures (showing the BJP-Shiv Sena victory in BMC polls) will reverse as it's a neck-and-neck fight, and counting of votes is ongoing," the Rajya Sabha member told reporters.
He said the real picture will become clear only at midnight.
Separately, Raut states on X that counting of votes in ward numbers 60 to 75 is yet to start.
The BJP contested 137 seats, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena 90, while the NCP, headed by Ajit Pawar, fielded candidates separately on 94 seats.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) had fielded 163 candidates, the MNS 52, the Congress 143, and the VBA (Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi) 46. (PTI)

Congress claims mayoral posts in 5 cities, flags poll irregularities
Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Friday claimed that the party would secure mayoral posts in five cities and have around 350 corporators across the state, adding that the Congress would be part of governing arrangements in at least 10 municipal corporations.
The Congress said it was in a position to install its mayors in Latur, Chandrapur, Bhiwandi in Thane district, Parbhani and Kolhapur, among the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls on January 15, with counting held on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Buldhana, Sapkal said the party’s performance may not be entirely satisfactory, but stressed that it had fought an “ideological battle” without compromising its values and had emerged as the principal Opposition force in Maharashtra. “The Congress today stands as the second-largest party in the state,” he said, noting that the party contested independently where possible and entered alliances elsewhere to strengthen itself organisationally and ideologically.
Alleging large-scale irregularities, Sapkal accused the BJP-led alliance of misusing money power and enabling bogus voting. “There was rampant distribution of money and bogus voting. Despite this, Congress workers stood firmly against the BJP’s bulldozer politics. This is the victory of our workers’ resolve,” he said.
Referring to Mumbai, Sapkal alleged that the BJP’s success was the result of “fixing”. “From ward delimitation to the use of machines and even issues related to indelible ink, everything was part of fixing,” he said, accusing the Election Commission of acting at the BJP’s behest.
Claiming the polls were neither free nor fair, Sapkal cited bogus voters, inducements, candidate poaching and what he described as the EC’s “ineffective functioning”. “Democracy and the Constitution are under threat,” he said, while asserting that Congress would continue its struggle. “This is a time of struggle. We are not disheartened by defeat and are fully prepared for the next battle,” he added, warning that authoritarianism may rise briefly but would eventually collapse.

BJP civic win reflects Hindutva-devlopment plank: Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday described the BJP’s performance in the Maharashtra civic polls as a triumph of the party’s core ideology, asserting that Hindutva and development go hand in hand.
“Hindutva has always been our soul; one cannot differentiate our Hindutva from development,” Fadnavis said, as quoted by PTI.
His remarks came amid a sharp ideological exchange with the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by former ally Uddhav Thackeray, which has accused the BJP of practising “fake” Hindutva. The BJP, in turn, has alleged that the Thackerays have abandoned the ideology altogether.
According to trends reported by television channels till 6:25 pm, the BJP and its allies were poised to form governing boards in 25 of the 29 municipal corporations across the state. This includes a strong showing in Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, underscoring the ruling alliance’s dominance in the civic polls.
