BMW crashes off Mumbai Coastal Road, killing 3; supercar racing concerns resurface
The BMW plunged from the elevated road early Sunday, days after police cracked down on alleged supercar racing on the Coastal Road
A speeding BMW crashed off Mumbai’s Coastal Road in the early hours of Sunday (September 20), killing three people and leaving another critically injured.
The black BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver allegedly lost control. The car hit a boundary wall and crashed through the edge of the elevated road before falling into a construction area where parking work was underway.
Emergency response
The Coastal Road Control Room received information about the accident at around 5.20 am.

All four occupants were rushed to the civic-run Nair Hospital. Three of them were declared dead on arrival, while the fourth, 23-year-old Aditya Kalpeshwar Oswal, was admitted to the trauma ward in critical condition.
The three deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal, 17-year-old Dhairya Darshan Seth and 19-year-old Aditya Jakasniya.
CCTV captures crash
The impact was severe. CCTV footage accessed by India Today shows the BMW flying off the elevated road at around 5.03 am and crashing into the ground-level construction site below.
The car was badly damaged in the crash. Its roof was pushed in, the windshield was shattered and the front end was completely crushed, with the bumper torn off and internal components exposed. The car also hit and tore through a signboard hanging from the bridge.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, including whether speeding led to the crash.
Earlier cases
The accident comes weeks after Mumbai Police registered cases against six to seven supercars for allegedly racing inside the Coastal Road tunnel. The vehicles included a Lamborghini, BMW M2 and BMW Z4.
The cases were registered on September 3 under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for negligent driving and acts endangering life or personal safety.
Speeding spotlight
The latest crash has again put the spotlight on speeding and reckless driving on the newly opened Coastal Road, which has emerged as one of Mumbai’s key high-speed routes.
The 10.58-km Coastal Road connects Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
