Maharashtra ashram head booked for alleged rape, POCSO offences

A search has been launched for the accused Dattagiri Guru Jairamji Maharaj of Anand Math, who is absconding


Amravati, Jul 21 (PTI) A spiritual leader heading an ashram in Maharashtra's Amravati allegedly repeatedly raped a woman and sexually exploited her since she was a minor in 2016, police said on Tuesday.

Police on Sunday registered a case against Dattagiri Guru Jairamji Maharaj of Anand Math under sections 64(2) (rape) and 351(2) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, an official said.

A search has been launched for the accused, who is absconding, inspector Suresh Maske of Chandur Railway police station said.

The survivor, in her complaint, alleged that she first met Jairamji Maharaj in 2014 during an event, and started living with him from 2016 when she was a minor, he said.

She alleged that the accused raped her repeatedly and sexually exploited her during this period, the official said, adding that further probe is underway. PTI
