Assembly elections LIVE: West Bengal sees 90% voter turnout; TN 84%
The voter turnout is among the highest in both states in recent electoral history
Close to 90 per cent of the 3.60 crore electors turned up to vote in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly polls till 5 pm on Thursday, held under the shadow of large-scale name deletions under the SIR exercise, sporadic violence and assault on at least three candidates.
The voter turnout is among the highest in the state's recent electoral history. Polling in 16 districts began at 7 am on Thursday amid tight security to decide the electoral fate of 1,478 candidates, including 167 women, in 152 constituencies of the 294-strong state Assembly.
Long queues outside polling booths reflected strong voter participation in what is being seen as a crucial round in a high-stakes contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP.
The state recorded 89.93 per cent voter turnout till 5 pm, with the Dakshin Dinajpur district leading with 93.12 per cent polling. With voting slated to continue till 6 pm, political observers said the turnout might cross 95 per cent.
The second phase will be held on April 29, when 142 seats in and around Kolkata go to polls.
Tamil Nadu also sees high turnout
Tamil Nadu surpassed its highest assembly polls turnout on Thursday, when over 84 per cent of the 5.73 crore voters cast their vote for the elections to 234 constituencies across the state. Till 6 pm, the state recorded 84.29 per cent voting, according to Election Commission of India (EC) figures. The state recorded its highest--78.29 per cent, in the 2011 polls that the AIADMK swept.
Incidentally, through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the electorate size has been reduced from 6.41 crore recorded in October 2025 to the current 5.73 crore. Consequently, the 2021 polls saw about 6.29 crore people registered, 56 lakh voters more than this year.
On Thursday, Karur district topped with 91.86 per cent voter turnout.
Chennai registered 83.09 per cent polling, while in Madurai it was 80.15 per cent, Coimbatore saw 84.40 per cent and the centrally located Tiruchirappalli district witnessed 85.04 per cent polling. Kolathur Assembly constituency in Chennai, where DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin is contesting, saw 85.63 polling till 6 pm.
At Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni, it was 83.58 per cent. Deputy CM and Stalin's son, Udhayanidhi is trying his luck for the second time from this city constituency.

TVK alleges transport lapses, seeks action against IAS officers
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Aadhav Arjuna on Thursday alleged lapses in transport arrangements during polling, claiming they had affected voters trying to reach polling stations.
“I made a complaint against the Principal Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu, Chiru IAS; Managing Director, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Prabhu Shankar, IAS; and Managing Director, State Express Transport Corporation, R Mohan,” he said, outlining the officials named in his complaint.
Arjuna argued that planning had fallen short in the run-up to voting day. “In the last 24 hours, you can see there is no proper plan and execution in the TN Transport Department,” he said, adding that a prior directive had called for adequate arrangements. “Madam Archana Patnaik gave a circular for arranging proper transport and bus facilities because more than a lakh of people reached Chennai 48 hours before.”
He also made political allegations, saying, “The interim CM M. K. Stalin is still controlling some IAS officers… pressuring them to stop all transport facilities.” Calling for action, he said, “We want to suspend these three IAS officers. We need a department inquiry.”

CPI(M) flags ECI lapses as West Bengal sees largely peaceful poll
CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim said polling in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was largely calm, even as he pointed to lapses by the Election Commission over isolated incidents of violence.
“Polling so far has been overall peaceful, barring some violence in Birbhum and some parts of Murshidabad. All said and done, ECI's incapability is evident,” Salim told PTI.
He was responding to reports of clashes and allegations of attacks in certain constituencies, including claims that a BJP candidate in Kumarganj in Dakshin Dinajpur district was manhandled. Salim said election authorities and police observers should have been more alert in such cases.
Across the state, voting was marked by scattered incidents of scuffles and tension in a few pockets, prompting the Election Commission to seek detailed reports from affected areas.
Despite this, turnout remained steady. By 11 a.m., over 41 per cent of the 3.60 crore eligible voters had cast their ballots. Polling on Thursday covered 152 constituencies across 16 districts, with 1,478 candidates, including 167 women, in the fray.

Newlyweds rush to vote after wedding in Chennai
At a polling booth in Kodambakkam, Chennai, better known as the heart of Tamil Nadu’s film industry, voters waiting in line found their attention drawn not to a celebrity, but to a newly married couple who arrived straight from their wedding ceremony.
Dressed in traditional attire, the groom in a silk veshti and the bride in a silk saree, both still wearing their wedding garlands, the couple stepped into the queue to cast their votes minutes after getting married.
The groom, Sunil, an advocate, said the visit to the polling station came almost immediately after the ceremony. “Because we are rushing against time, as my wife's vote is in Kallakurichi district. After here, we have to go there,” he told PTI Videos, explaining their tight schedule.
He added that the wedding had been planned well before the election dates were announced. “But, despite the scheduling overlap, I wanted to cast my vote, so did my wife. So, immediately after the ceremony, we came to the booth and did our duty as citizens,” Sunil said.
He stressed that voting should be seen not just as a duty, but as a responsibility.
Polling across all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu began at 7 am on Thursday under security arrangements.
