Cauvery row: SC asks Karnataka to comply with CWMA's directions on water release to TN

The CWRC, which met in New Delhi last Tuesday, asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water per day starting August 12 for the next 15 days


The Supreme Court on Monday (August 17) asked Karnataka to comply with the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWMA) directions on the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.

Hearing a plea filed by Tamil Nadu seeking implementation of the CWMA's direction requiring Karnataka to release water, a Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta posted the matter to August 24 and also called for a status report from the CWMA.

"Let this matter be posted after a week so that further status regarding the release of water can be reported. In the meantime, the respondent to ensure compliance of CWMA directions," the bench observed.

The CWRC, which met in New Delhi last Tuesday, asked Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water per day starting August 12 for the next 15 days. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), the appellate body, subsequently upheld this decision.
