LIVE: 5 killed, dozens injured as Iran launches fresh missile attacks on Israel
Iran announced it had launched some 100 missiles and vowed further retaliation for the surprise attack on its nuclear programme and military leadership that Israel began last Friday
Iran on Monday (June 16) launched a new wave of missile attacks on Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the country as emergency services reported projectiles striking and shrapnel falling in Israel's north and centre, wounding at least 67 people.

Fourth day of warfare
Powerful explosions, likely from Israel's defence systems intercepting Iranian missiles, rocked Tel Aviv shortly before dawn, ushering in a fourth day of open warfare between the regional foes. Plumes of black smoke rose into the sky over the major coastal city.
Authorities in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv said that Iranian missiles had hit a residential building there, charring concrete walls, blowing out windows and heavily damaging multiple apartments. There was no immediate word on the number of casualties from that strike as rescuers searched through the ruins.
Iran says it fired 100 missiles
Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service said it was treating 67 wounded people evacuated from four different places hit by missile strikes. It said most of the people were in moderate or mild condition.
Iranian state TV said the country fired at least 100 missiles at Israel, signalling that it had no intention of yielding to international calls for de-escalation as it pressed on with its retaliation for Israel's surprise attack Friday on Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme and military leadership.

The latest salvo comes after a weekend of escalating tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and Iran that raised fears of a wider, more dangerous regional war.
Iran on Sunday said Israel struck oil refineries, killed the intelligence chief of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and hit population centres in intensive aerial attacks that raised the death toll from Israel's campaign to 224 people. Health authorities also reported that 1,277 were wounded, without distinguishing between military officials and civilians.
Israel said Iran had fired over 270 missiles since Friday, 22 of which slipped through the country's sophisticated multi-tiered air defences and caused havoc in residential suburbs, killing 14 people and wounding 390 others as of late Sunday.

Challenging days ahead: IDF
At a press conference, Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said that more Iranian ballistic missile attacks on Israel are expected in the coming days.
“Challenging days are ahead. There will be more launches and impacts in the coming days,” Defrin said, adding that the Israeli Air Force is “not stopping striking (in Iran) for a moment”.
“Even at this hour, we are striking dozens of targets in Tehran. We are deepening the damage to (Iran's) nuclear programme and military capabilities, to disrupt and reduce the risk to the home front,” the IDF spokesperson said.
In a post on X, the IDF said that contrary to Iran, which it said is targeting the civilian population, Israel has been trying not to harm the Iranian population.
"This is the message we spread to Iranian citizens. While Iran chooses to strike without warning, we choose to warn innocent people even if it means giving up the element of surprise. We warn them, in Persian, across many channels," the IDF wrote. "Because human life comes first to us. That’s the difference between us and our enemy," it added.

Iran will pay a “very heavy price”: Netanyahu
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday warned that Iran will pay a “very heavy price” for targeting civilians in Israel.
He made the comments while visiting the site of an early morning Iranian missile strike in the city of Bat Yam, close to Tel Aviv. At least seven people were killed and several dozen others wounded in the strike.
“Iran will pay a very heavy price for the murder of civilians — women, children — that it carried out deliberately. We will achieve our objectives, and we will strike them with overwhelming force," the Prime Minister's Office quoted Netanyahu as saying.
“We are here because we are in an existential battle — one that is now clear to every citizen of Israel. Think about what would happen if Iran had a nuclear weapon to drop on Israel’s cities,” Netanyahu said.
“Think about what would happen if Iran had 20,000 missiles like this one — not one, but 20,000. That is an existential threat to Israel. That is why we launched a war of salvation against a double threat of annihilation, and we are doing so with strength. Our soldiers, our pilots, are above the skies of Iran,” he added.
He advised citizens to follow the instructions of the Home Front Command during Iranian missile attacks. - 15 Jun 2025 4:54 PM IST

Nuclear talks called off
Planned talks on Iran's nuclear programme, which could provide an off-ramp, have been called off.
The Arab Gulf country of Oman, which has been mediating indirect talks between the US and Iran over Tehran's nuclear programme, said a sixth round planned for Sunday would not take place.
Iran's top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, said Saturday that the nuclear talks were “unjustifiable” after Israel's strikes, which he said were the “result of the direct support by Washington”. - 15 Jun 2025 3:21 PM IST
Explosions in Tehran
New explosions echoed across Tehran and were reported elsewhere in the country early Sunday, but there was no update to a death toll put out the day before by Iran's UN ambassador, who said 78 people had been killed and more than 320 wounded.
Semi-official Iranian news agencies reported that an Israeli drone strike had caused a “strong explosion” at an Iranian natural-gas processing plant, in what could be the first Israeli attack on Iran's oil and natural gas industry. Israel's military did not immediately comment.
World leaders are issuing urgent calls to deescalate.
But Israeli's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel's strikes so far are “nothing compared to what they will feel under the sway of our forces in the coming days”. - 15 Jun 2025 3:21 PM IST
Death toll grows in Israel
At least 10 people in Israel were killed in Iranian strikes overnight and into Sunday, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service, bringing the country's total death toll to 13.
At least six people, including two children, were killed when a missile hit an apartment building in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv. Daniel Hadad, a local police commander, said 180 people were wounded and seven are still missing.
An Associated Press reporter saw streets lined with damaged and destroyed buildings, bombed out cars and shards of glass. Responders used a drone at points to look for survivors. Some people could be seen leaving the area with suitcases.
Four people were killed when a missile struck a building in the northern Israeli town of Tamra, and another 24 were wounded. A strike on the central city of Rehovot wounded 42 people. - 15 Jun 2025 3:20 PM IST
Israel's airspace stays closed
The Israel Airports Authority said Israel's airspace remained closed on Sunday and the country's Ben Gurion International Airport was still closed to landings and takeoffs for the third day.
The authority said it was working with Israeli airlines toward returning Israelis stranded abroad to the country.
“All air crews and aircraft are ready for action as soon as this becomes possible, but this may take a long time, depending on the security situation," it said.

Work crews sift through wreckage after Arab Israel city is hit
A bulldozer dug through debris Sunday near a home in the Arab Israeli city of Tamra. The home's third floor was pancaked and nearby buildings were also damaged. Four people, including a 13-year-old, were killed in the strike.
Wahid Yassin, a neighbour, told Israeli Army Radio the blast was so powerful it nearly ripped off the door of his bomb shelter.
When he emerged, he said he saw the neighbours' daughter standing on the roof of her damaged home, shaking.
“Her two sisters and her mother were killed in this incident. And suddenly she's there on the roof, alone, shaking," he said. - 15 Jun 2025 3:17 PM IST
Israel warns Iranians to evacuate weapons factories
The Israeli military warned Iranians on Sunday to immediately evacuate “military weapons production factories”, likely signalling that new strikes are planned.
Col. Avichay Adraee, a military spokesperson, posted the warning on the social platform X in Iran's Farsi language.
Adraee in the past has signalled other strikes in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Yemen amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
His warning came just after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that if the Israeli strikes on Iran stop, then “our responses will also stop”.
