LIVE: 5 killed, dozens injured as Iran launches fresh missile attacks on Israel
Iran announced it had launched some 100 missiles and vowed further retaliation for the surprise attack on its nuclear programme and military leadership that Israel began last Friday
Iran on Monday (June 16) launched a new wave of missile attacks on Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the country as emergency services reported projectiles striking and shrapnel falling in Israel's north and centre, wounding at least 67 people.

Fourth day of warfare
Powerful explosions, likely from Israel's defence systems intercepting Iranian missiles, rocked Tel Aviv shortly before dawn, ushering in a fourth day of open warfare between the regional foes. Plumes of black smoke rose into the sky over the major coastal city.
Authorities in the central Israeli city of Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv said that Iranian missiles had hit a residential building there, charring concrete walls, blowing out windows and heavily damaging multiple apartments. There was no immediate word on the number of casualties from that strike as rescuers searched through the ruins.
Iran says it fired 100 missiles
Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service said it was treating 67 wounded people evacuated from four different places hit by missile strikes. It said most of the people were in moderate or mild condition.
Iranian state TV said the country fired at least 100 missiles at Israel, signalling that it had no intention of yielding to international calls for de-escalation as it pressed on with its retaliation for Israel's surprise attack Friday on Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme and military leadership.

The latest salvo comes after a weekend of escalating tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and Iran that raised fears of a wider, more dangerous regional war.
Iran on Sunday said Israel struck oil refineries, killed the intelligence chief of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and hit population centres in intensive aerial attacks that raised the death toll from Israel's campaign to 224 people. Health authorities also reported that 1,277 were wounded, without distinguishing between military officials and civilians.
Israel said Iran had fired over 270 missiles since Friday, 22 of which slipped through the country's sophisticated multi-tiered air defences and caused havoc in residential suburbs, killing 14 people and wounding 390 others as of late Sunday.

Iran says it doesn't seek weapons but insists on nuclear rights
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons and is open to an agreement that would ensure that.
“But if the purpose of an agreement is to deprive Iran of its nuclear rights, then naturally, we are not prepared to accept such an agreement,” he said in a meeting with diplomats.
Araghchi had planned to attend a sixth round of indirect talks with the US over Iran's disputed nuclear programme before they were called off after Israel's surprise bombardment of Iran's military and nuclear sites on Friday. - 15 Jun 2025 3:16 PM IST

Adraee in the past has signalled other strikes in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Yemen amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

UK moves fighter jets to Middle East as PM Keir Starmer calls for de-escalation
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday that the UK is moving military assets, including jets, to the Middle East for contingency support across the region.
Starmer refused to rule out defending Israel from Iranian strikes despite Tehran’s threat that such an action could lead to British bases in the region being targeted, the Guardian reported.
“I will always make the right decisions for the UK,” he said, when asked about his reaction to Iran’s threats against the bases of any western nations that came to Israel’s aid. “We are moving assets to the region, including jets, and that is for contingency support in the region," he was quoted by Reuters as saying.
Britain already has fighter jets in the Middle East as part of an operation to counter threats in Iraq and Syria.

“If the aggression stops, our responses will also stop,” Araghchi said.
There was no immediate reaction from Israel, which had been continuing strikes Sunday across Iran.
Araghchi's appearance came on a day he was initially scheduled to be negotiating with the United States in Oman over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program. But the negotiations fell apart amid the Israeli attacks. (AP)

Iran didn't anticipate Israeli attacks before planned US negotiations: Report
Iran was caught off guard by Israel's strikes on its nuclear facilities in Tehran ahead of the sixth round of US-Iran talks, which had been scheduled for Sunday in Oman, a New York Times report said.
Officials close to Iran’s leadership told the paper that while Tehran was aware of Israel’s preparations for a potential attack, it did not anticipate that such strikes would occur while diplomatic negotiations with Washington were still active.
This miscalculation reportedly contributed to the high effectiveness of the Israeli operation launched early Friday morning.

The Houthis have been carrying out repeated attacks on Israel – most of which were intercepted – claiming the strikes are in support of Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war.
