Govt says Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled attacks
India has said that Pakistan military deployed around 300-400 drones, likely made in Turkey, to unleash an attack on over 25 Indian cities in the intervening night of May 8-9.
At a Ministry of External Affairs press briefing on Friday evening, the government said Pakistan did not close its airspace, and used civilian planes as shields. The govt said Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled the attacks.
An armed UAV of Pakistan also attempted to target Bathinda military station, which was quickly detected and neutralised, the govt said.
Earlier, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday (May 9) said it has foiled an infiltration bid from across the International Border in Jammu, killing at least seven terrorists and destroying a Pak Rangers' post.
The terrorists were engaged around 11 pm on Thursday in Samba district after a “big group” of theirs was detected by the “surveillance grid”. This infiltration bid was supported by fire from Pakistan Rangers post at Dhandhar, a BSF spokesperson said.
He said the troops neutralised the infiltration bid, killing “at least” seven terrorists and causing “extensive” damage to the Dhandhar post. Officials said there could be more terrorists, who could have been neutralised.
IPL suspended
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was on Friday suspended indefinitely due to the escalating military confrontation between India and Pakistan with a BCCI official saying that continuing the event in the current situation would not look appropriate.
A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of the ongoing edition since the cancellation of Thursday's match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war,” a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the high-profile league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata as per the original schedule. Twelve league matches and four knockout games are left to be played.

Coastguard enforces mandatory registration of all boats under Porbandar Boat Owners Association
The Coastguard is registering every boat and its employees under the Porbandar Boat Owners Association. Any boat or person unaccounted for is being arrested keeping in mind that the boat carrying terrorists docked at Porbandar from where they traveled to Mumbai during the 9/11 attack. So far two boats have been seized. No person has been arrested so far, officials said.

Operation Sindoor: Chandigarh cancels UT employees's leaves
The Chandigarh Administration has cancelled leaves of the UT employees in view of escalating tension between India and Pakistan.
According to an official statement here on Friday, "The Chandigarh Administration has issued directions that the employees of all the Departments/Boards/Corporations must maintain their respective headquarter or station within Chandigarh and should not leave it, till further orders." "Any leave sanctioned earlier is hereby cancelled unless approved afresh by the Secretary concerned and that too in exceptional circumstances," it said.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government has directed all the employees of state government, boards, corporations and universities not to leave their headquarter/station until further orders.
On Thursday, the Haryana government ordered that no leave will be granted to the employees working in the health department until further orders.

Military action can't bring peace : PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday called for political intervention to resolve issues between India and Pakistan, saying military action cannot be a solution to bring peace in the region.
Addressing a press conference here, she appealed the leadership of both the countries to exercise restraint and put an immediate halt to attacks on each other.
"Pulwama and Pahalgam are two such incidents that brought the two countries on the verge of a catastrophe. If it continues like this, then there is a danger to the whole world.
"Be it Kargil, Pulwama, Pahlagam or Pathankot, we have seen whenever there is a military action, it only treats symptoms, it does not treat the root cause of the problem. It doesn't bring any solution and doesn't help in maintaining permanent peace," she said.
The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir said nothing can be achieved through military intervention.
"Our country is emerging as a huge force in the world, the internal situation is not good in Pakistan. So, both the countries should attempt to have political intervention. Nothing can be achieved from military intervention," she added.
The PDP president said the situation, especially on the borders on both the sides, is very tense, and there is an immediate need for de-escalation.
"People are leaving their homes, some have lost their lives, including children and women. There is an urgent need for restraint. The immediate need is to de-escalate the situation. The leadership of both the countries should make up their minds and think seriously about de-escalating the situation," she said.
Civilians on both sides of J-K are getting killed. They did not start this war, it is not happening because of their will but they are paying a huge price right now, she added.
Referring to the children killed in cross-border shelling, she asked what was the fault of children and women? "I urge the leadership of both the countries to stop attacks for God's sake. Till how long will the people of J-K bear this brunt," she said, breaking down into tears.
She said both the countries seem to have served their purpose of the attacks.
"Both the countries have settled their scores. So, why then blood of children is being spilled," she said.
