Govt says Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled attacks
India has said that Pakistan military deployed around 300-400 drones, likely made in Turkey, to unleash an attack on over 25 Indian cities in the intervening night of May 8-9.
At a Ministry of External Affairs press briefing on Friday evening, the government said Pakistan did not close its airspace, and used civilian planes as shields. The govt said Pakistan launched drones and missiles towards military bases in Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur, and India successfully foiled the attacks.
An armed UAV of Pakistan also attempted to target Bathinda military station, which was quickly detected and neutralised, the govt said.
Earlier, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday (May 9) said it has foiled an infiltration bid from across the International Border in Jammu, killing at least seven terrorists and destroying a Pak Rangers' post.
The terrorists were engaged around 11 pm on Thursday in Samba district after a “big group” of theirs was detected by the “surveillance grid”. This infiltration bid was supported by fire from Pakistan Rangers post at Dhandhar, a BSF spokesperson said.
He said the troops neutralised the infiltration bid, killing “at least” seven terrorists and causing “extensive” damage to the Dhandhar post. Officials said there could be more terrorists, who could have been neutralised.
IPL suspended
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was on Friday suspended indefinitely due to the escalating military confrontation between India and Pakistan with a BCCI official saying that continuing the event in the current situation would not look appropriate.
A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of the ongoing edition since the cancellation of Thursday's match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war,” a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the high-profile league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata as per the original schedule. Twelve league matches and four knockout games are left to be played.

Gujarat CM meets military officials
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday met officials from the armed forces and assured them that they won’t face any difficulty in carrying out their operations in the state.
The meeting was aimed at establishing better coordination between government departments, armed and paramilitary forces operating in the state, said Harsh Sanghavi, minister of state for home, after the interaction in Gandhinagar on Friday morning.
Besides senior employees of various departments, including police and collectors of border districts, officials from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Border Security Force and Coast Guard also attended the meeting, he said.
“The CM thanked the armed forces on behalf of the people. He also reviewed the work of all the departments to ensure that the forces do not face any difficulty in such a crucial time,” Sanghavi told reporters after coming out of the meeting.
The minister appealed to civilians not to believe in rumours and urged them to rely on information shared by district authorities.
The meeting was held against the backdrop of the Indian armed forces carrying out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan under Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

European Union issues statement amid escalating India-Pak tensions
The European Union (EU), in its statement, unequivocally condemned the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April and the murder of innocent civilians.
"Terrorism can never be justified. Those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice. Every state has the duty and the right lawfully to protect its citizens from acts of terror," the statement said.
"The EU calls on both parties to exercise restraint, to de-escalate tensions and desist from further attacks to safeguard civilian lives on both sides. It is vital that India and Pakistan also live up to their obligations under international law and take all measures possible to protect civilian lives," the European Union said.

Amit Shah reviews security at Indo-Pak border and airports
Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reviewed the prevailing situation along India's border with Pakistan and airports in the country amid the military conflict between the two countries, sources said.
The meeting came hours after the Border Security Force said it has foiled an infiltration bid from across the International Border in Jammu, killing at least seven terrorists and destroying a Pakistan Rangers post.
Apart from reviewing the security situation along the India-Pakistan border, Shah also took stock of the steps taken to beef up security at airports across the country, the sources said.

Rajnath Singh reviews security situation with top military leaders
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday carried out a comprehensive review of the national security scenario with the top military leadership, a day after Pakistan's attempts to target Indian military installations were repelled.
Every aspect of the evolving security situation was discussed in the meeting, it is learnt.
The meeting was attended by Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Operation Sindoor: Odisha further tightens security at key installations
Amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Odisha government on Friday further tightened security in all key installations, including the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore district.
Apart from ITR, official sources said security arrangements have been significantly strengthened at several critical locations, such as the Army Air Defence College near Gopalpur, ordnance factory in Balangir, INS Chilka and the Indian Rare Earths Limited (IERL) near Chhatrapur.
A top police officer said security has also been beefed up at Jagannath Temple in Puri and Hirakud reservoir in Sambalpur district.
At Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar, passengers are undergoing multi-layered security checks before boarding flights.
